The Starfish Parable: Getting Excited About Corporate Social Responsibility

MethodData believes that as a business and as a part of the global human family, it is our responsibility to be helping communities where we can. This not only contributes to a deeper and more meaningful corporate culture but encourages our team to make a real difference to those most in need.  Borrowing from the motivation behind the Starfish Greathearts Foundation, we wanted to share the Starfish parable with you, so you can see why we are so excited by our corporate social responsibility initiatives.

The parable

One day, the old man was walking along a beach that was littered with thousands of starfish that had been washed ashore by the high tide. As he walked he came upon a young boy who was eagerly throwing the starfish back into the ocean, one by one.

Puzzled, the man looked at the boy and asked what he was doing. 

The young boy paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean. The tide has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t return to the sea by themselves,” the boy replied. “When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water.”

The old man replied, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much of a difference.”

The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the ocean. Then he turned, smiled and said, “It made a difference to that one!”

Influenced by the parable

The Starfish Parable inspired a group of South Africans in London who wanted to make a real long-term difference in people’s lives. They founded the Starfish Greathearts Foundation in 2001. Today, Starfish Greathearts Foundation USA supports 3000 vulnerable children in South Africa, orphaned by HIV Aids.

How MethodData is helping?

MethodData is supporting Starfish in multiple ways with our technological experience and background. We are using our core competencies and skillsets to automate and improve processes for Starfish. This allows them to keep focused on their core mission. MethodData is providing consultation around the best use of MethodData’s infrastructure and 3rd party technologies to drive charitable events and fundraising activity. This is accomplished by constructing API Integrations across Starfish’s various technology platforms, for a more fluid and automated operations on an otherwise over-burdened staff.

Furthermore, we  are also consulting on their Customer Relationship Management Software. This includes reporting and analysis of their data.

Our hope is that in sharing our small story with you, that you continue to feel motivated to inject even more energy into your Corporate Social Responsibility programs. No matter how small or young the maturity of your program.
